Knot Tying Guide ๐Ÿชข

The 6 essential Scout knots with step-by-step instructions and a quiz at the bottom.

1
Reef Knot
Joining two ropes of the same thickness
Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†โ˜†โ˜† Easy
1Hold one end of rope in each hand.
2Cross the right end over the left and tuck it under (like the start of tying your shoelace).
3Now cross the same end back over the other way and tuck it through the loop.
4Pull both ends tight. The knot should be flat and square.
5Check: both ends should come out the same side. If one goes up and one goes down it is a granny knot, not a reef knot!
2
Bowline
Making a fixed loop that will not slip
Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜† Medium
1Make a small loop in the standing part of the rope ("the rabbit hole").
2Bring the working end up through the loop from underneath ("the rabbit comes out of the hole").
3Take the working end around behind the standing part ("the rabbit runs around the tree").
4Push the working end back down through the small loop ("the rabbit goes back down the hole").
5Hold the large loop and pull the standing end to tighten.
3
Clove Hitch
Attaching rope to a pole or post
Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†โ˜† Easy-Medium
1Wrap the rope once around the pole from left to right.
2Cross the working end over the standing part diagonally.
3Wrap around the pole again, going underneath the diagonal cross.
4Tuck the working end under the last wrap to lock the knot.
5Pull both ends to tighten. The two wraps should form an X on the pole.
4
Sheet Bend
Joining ropes of different thickness
Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜† Medium
1Make a bight (fold) with the thicker rope.
2Thread the thinner rope up through the bight.
3Take the thinner rope around behind both legs of the bight.
4Tuck it under itself (not under the bight) on the same side it entered.
5Pull tight. Both short ends should be on the same side of the knot.
5
Figure Eight
Stopper knot, prevents rope sliding through
Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†โ˜†โ˜† Easy
1Make a loop in the rope.
2Take the working end over the standing part, then under it.
3Bring the working end back through the original loop from the front.
4Pull tight. It should look like the number 8.
6
Round Turn & Two Half Hitches
Securing a rope to a post or ring
Difficulty: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†โ˜† Easy-Medium
1Pass the rope around the post or ring twice (this is the "round turn").
2Take the working end and make a half hitch: loop it over the standing part and through.
3Make a second identical half hitch just below the first.
4Pull both half hitches tight along the standing part.
5The round turn takes the load while the half hitches lock it in place.
