How the Scout program works and which resources on this site help you earn your badges.

The Australian Scout Program

The Scout section (ages 11 to 14) is built on three overlapping systems that work together. Here is what each one means.

๐Ÿ…
Milestone Awards

There are 3 Milestones in the Scout section. Think of them as levels you unlock in order. Each Milestone requires you to:

  • Learn and demonstrate specific skills
  • Complete activities across the SPICES areas (Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional, Spiritual)
  • Show service to your community
  • Progress your Outdoor Adventure Skills

Your leader assesses you and signs off when you are ready. There is no set age for each Milestone. You move at your own pace.

๐Ÿงญ
Outdoor Adventure Skills

OAS is a system of 9 adventure streams, each with 10 stages. You earn a stage badge as you progress through each stream. The three most common for Scouts are Camping, Bushwalking and Bushcraft.

You do not have to do all 9 streams. Choose the ones that interest you and your patrol. Stage 1 is beginner level. Stage 10 is expert. Each stage builds on the skills from the one before.

๐Ÿ”ญ
Special Interest Areas

SIAs let you go deep on something you are genuinely passionate about: photography, cooking, coding, first aid, community service, and many more. You propose an SIA project to your leader and work on it independently over several weeks.

An SIA is your chance to follow your own interests and show what you can do when you direct your own learning.

Using This Site With Your Troop

  • All resources on this site align with the Australian Scout program (Scouts Australia). They are designed to support, not replace, your program delivery.
  • The resources work best as homework or study between meetings, not as a replacement for hands-on activity. A Scout who has studied the Knot Guide before a meeting will learn the physical skill faster.
  • The quizzes on each page are self-assessed and for practice only. They do not record results or replace formal leader assessment.
  • Each resource page includes a tag showing which badge pathway it supports. The full resource map above shows exactly where each page sits in the program.
  • Resources tagged "Camping OAS", "Bushwalking OAS" or "Bushcraft OAS" align with those specific OAS streams. Resources tagged "Milestone 1/2/3" align with those Milestone requirements.
  • This site is built and maintained by a Scout, for Scouts. If anything is incorrect or needs updating, contact us through the About page.
